 Health and Wellness Trailblazer Award

The Business Challenge

According to The American Institute of Stress, “workplace stress costs the nation more than $300 billion dollars each year in health-care, missed work, and the stress-reduction industry that has grown up to soothe workers and to keep production high,” reports the New York Times. Stress in the workplace causes 40 percent of employee turnover according to Information Education Management Resolution.  And The American Institute of Stress estimates that workers who report that they are stressed incur physical and mental health-care costs that are 46-percent higher than other employees.

The Harvard Business Review states that although absenteeism due to workplace stress and resulting health issues is an increasing issue for the business bottom line, ‘presenteeism’ may cause an even greater problem.  ‘Presenteeism’  suggests a bigger threat to productivity – sick workers who show up at work but are not fully functioning.  US companies may lose $150 billion dollars annually because of presenteeism, according to estimates.

As health-care costs are rising to an all time high and showing no promise of decrease employers are looking to new and creative solutions to support the health and wellness of today’s workforce as a means of sustaining a healthy business bottom line.

The Solution

Employers, with the support of healthcare experts, are seeking to find cost-effective solutions to respond to the challenge of increased health care costs and decreased workplace productivity. The solutions address both physical and mental wellness and include pooling healthcare benefits among employers, engaging EAP services, providing on-site health care facilities, offering stress management seminars and developing in-house, team oriented programs such as body challenges and recreational sports.

Health and Wellness Trailblazer Award Description

The Health and Wellness Trailblazer is given to an employer that demonstrates exemplary commitment to the overall health and wellness of its workforce.  To earn the ‘Health and Wellness’ Trailblazer an employer must prove commitment to health and wellness in both the physical and mental wellness categories.  Each of these categories requires a demonstration of the specific policies and practices offered to the workforce, ranging from stress prevention seminars and EAP services to on-site health facilities and body challenges.

Health and Wellness Trailblazer Award Process

Health & Wellness Project Objective

In an effort to support the Greater Washington, D.C. Area Business community in addressing these challenges, the Alliance for Workplace Excellence (AWE) and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce formed a partnership to launch the Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award Initiative.  The initiative is largely funded by Alliant, MyEyeDr..., Essilor, Adventist Hospital, Life/ Work Strategies, Community Health Charities, and Wellness Corporate Solutions.  The primary purpose of this initiative is to:

1.       Educate employers about the financial benefits associated with creating healthy workplaces.

2.       Recognize employers for their innovative practices and their commitment and support to the health and well being of their workforce.

3.       Offer tools and services to assist employers in building healthy work environments.

Corporate health and wellness programs are a solution to rising healthcare costs that directly impact today’s employers and employees alike.  The project includes a Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award, an annual award ceremony in conjunction with the existing “Workplace Excellence” recognition event, networking opportunities among Health & Wellness and “Workplace Excellence” award-winners, and educational workshops.

Consideration for the Health and Wellness Trailblazer Award

Employers are encouraged to complete a comprehensive application as a means of determining an employer’s commitment to its workforce’s health and wellness.  The application has two major categories: (1) Physical Health (2) Mental Wellness.  In order to be considered for the award, applicants must demonstrate an equal commitment to both categories.

Application Assessment

The Corporate Advisory Council, consisting of local and national experts in physical health and mental wellness, reviews the applications and determines the winners based on an objective, statistically sound assessment process.

Recognition

The selected employers are publicly recognized during the annual ‘Workplace Excellence’ Award in front of an audience of over 700 Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia business executives.

 Workplace Excellence’ Seal of Approval

Employers with an office presence in the state of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia are annually eligible to apply for the ‘Workplace Excellence’ Seal of Approval.  Employers must demonstrate equal commitment to workplace excellence in the following categories:  (1) Workplace Culture & Environment (2) Management Practices (3) Diversity (4) Internal Communication (5) Emergency Preparedness (6) Work/Life Benefits & Practices (7) Social Responsibility/Community Involvement.

An Independent Review Panel reviews the applications with the Director of the Independent Review Panel being responsible for overseeing the entire selection process.  The Review Panel consists of business and organizational development professors and PhD students.  A select number of employers are chosen for the ‘Workplace Excellence’ Seal of Approval.
