DBED Secretary Visits with Economic Development Committee
Last week, State Secretary of the Department of Business and Economic Development David Edgerley came to visit the Chamber and gave an overview of some of the goals and priorities of the Department under his leadership. Secretary Edgerley emphasized that these priorities are consistent with the Governor’s Vision for “One Maryland.”
The priorities include:
• Improve linkages between universities and hi-tech companies through the Office of Technology Policy. Ben Wu will serve as liaison in his capacity as Director of Technology Policy.
• Break down current system of regional divisiveness within DBED.
• Pay more attention to small businesses; reconnect with the Small Business Development Centers around the State.
• Further support business incubators around the State in order to foster the continued growth of emerging businesses.
The Economic Development Committee will focus its efforts throughout the summer and fall on identifying barriers to success within the science and technology industries as well as solutions to those barriers. We will work with Secretary Edgerley and the Montgomery County Delegation in order to reach solutions that ensure that Maryland continues to remain competitive in attracting knowledge economy jobs in science and technology.
