TEAMING STRATEGIES TO WIN was the subject of the GovConNet Member Meeting on February 26. Vance Hum, CEO, I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (seated right) presented his company expertise as a Federal government contractor delivering solutions related to environmental science and climate change. As a mid-tier company, I.M. Systems understands that developing relationships is key to winning contracts. Wayne Pizer, Vice President, Small Business Programs, L-3 Communications STRATIS (seated left) reinforced that teams do not occur "by accident." L-3 routinely conduct 6 months' of research on small business capabilities and past performance. Businesses should conduct due diligence on prospective partners. He advised contractors to be aware and update your business listing on Dun and Bradstreet, an important resource used by the Federal Government, primes and government. Pam Mazza, Managing Partner, PilieroMazza PLLC (standing left) spoke about the government trend to release larger, multi-award contracts which adds complexity to small businesses seeking opportunities. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) may establish mentor-protégé programs for small businesses, modeled after the 8(a) program. It is important to be focused on a specific Agency and the major players who contract with that agency. The Government contractors were reminded that reputation is everything and it only takes one person to undue an otherwise perfect opportunity.
